Art Galleries and Museums

In order to build my gallery as best as possible, I've done research on how many people visit galleries and museums every year. I focused only on data about the UK because my gallery is to be a Leicester.

I found the only distances related to 2016, which may no longer reproduce the reality, but at least give an outline of how many visitors there are.
I read that according to report by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport found that 47.6 million people visited the institutions it sponsors, such as Tate Modern, the British Museum, the Imperial War Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, between April 2015 and April 2016.
This number is smaller compared to previous years, but it should be remembered that it was a year with terroristic attacks in the background and the whole of Europe recorded a decrease in the number of tourists. As can be read later in the article, the Louvre had about 2 minutes fewer tourists.
Returning to the main thread. According to the Museums Association, though, the figures "only cover England's national museums and therefore provide a partial view of the health of the UK's museums"."In fact, the government's own Taking Part Survey shows that museum visits are at an all-time high in England, with 52.5% of all adults visiting a museum last year."One of the most significant numbers was young people visiting these museums for educational purposes, but it dropped by over 6% from the previous year. It is needed to remember that that group visits mainly historical museums, not an art gallery. The articles I read have made me realize that it's not so much the art galleries that attract tourists, but individual exhibitions do. For example, in that year there were two exhibitions that brought crowds to museums.
One was the exhibition about David Bowie's life, what was the fastest-selling event in the Victoria and Albert Museum's history.

The second one was Henri Matisse's artworks at Tate Modern.

Thanks to this I know that my gallery must have space for changing exhibitions, not only permanent ones. Personally, I'm not sure how many Leicester residents may want to visit a gallery, but taking how many art students there are here, I hope that a lot!

  1. There is some really good discussion here on Galleries and the footfall within them. You have linked this well to your project design. If you're not sure what the attraction might be in Leicester - look at New Walk Museum or the Attenborough Arts Centre and what their attendance figures are like.
